Car and motorcycle theory in Ireland

Plain-English guides to Ireland’s category BW car and category AM motorcycle Driver Theory Tests: format, marking, booking, road signs, rider preparation and Initial Basic Training.

Truck, bus and Driver CPC sit in the truck and bus theory guides. The instructor route is in the ADI guides.

Ireland has two learner theory tests in this family. Category BW is the car (and light van) Driver Theory Test. Category AM is the motorcycle test. Both are 40 questions in 45 minutes with a 35 pass mark. After BW you apply for a first learner permit and complete Essential Driver Training. After AM you complete Initial Basic Training before you can ride unaccompanied on a learner permit. The official RSA learning app contains the official question material. Car & Bike Theory Ireland is independent: its questions are written by TritonApps and are not the official bank.

A test-day checklist in short: book on theorytest.ie, bring accepted photo ID, arrive early, and treat the paper as 40 questions with only five errors to spare. Practise the shape first with the free 10-question quiz or the independent theory test app page. Truck, bus and Driver CPC sit in the truck and bus theory guides. The instructor route is in the ADI guides.

Practise the real test shape

Car & Bike Theory Ireland turns this material into separate category BW and AM practice: full 40-question mocks on the real timing, a road-signs trainer, rider guides, and an explanation on every answer.

Independent guide: TritonApps is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the Road Safety Authority or the Driver Theory Test service.
